    Notes:

    William French was born in Halstead, Essex County, England March 15,1603. He was a tailor and came to America with the Rev. Thomas Shepard inthe "Defence" in 1635, bringing his wife Elizabeth and four children. Hesettled at Cambridge and in 1652 was one of 13 petitioners for theseparation of Billerica, formerly Shawshin, from Cambridge.

    In 1647 he was Lieutenant and afterward Captain of Militia. In 1659 hewas authorized to soleminize marriages within Billerica and Chelmsford.

    He served as selectman 1660-4 and 1670-3, and was the author of thefamous tract entitled "Strength out of weakness" published in London andreprinted by the Boston Historical Society. His wife died March 31, 1668,and he remarried on May 6, 1669, to Mary Lathrop of Barnstable, dau. ofThomas Lathrop and widow of John Stearns of Billerica. He died Nov. 20,1681.

    Note: Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, Vice President DickCheney, Walt Disney and inventor Eli Whitney are all descendants ofWilliam French.

    Land surveyor and large land owner in Barnstable.

    Thomas was admitted freeman June 3, 1656. In a deposition taken April 4,1701 he stated "about 80 years of age". Based on other sources, webelieve Thomas was born earlier and before his father started the churchin Egerton. We believe Thomas was actually the eldest son born February21, 1612/13.

    The "Genealogical Notes of Barnstable Families" refer to Thomas Lothrop'swife as "Wid. Sarah Ewer." In the 1888 book at the CaliforniaGenealogical Society Library, someone pencilled in "(Learned)" as themaiden name for Widow Sarah Ewer.

    Note: Thomas Lothrop is the 4th great grandfather of the inventor, EliWhitney, the 6th great grandfather of the Financier, John Pierpont Morganand the 8th great grandfather of U.S. President George Herbert WalkerBush. He is the 10th great grandfather of Gordon B. Hinckley, the 15thPresident of the Mormon Church.

    Notes:

    Reverend John Lothrop, his second wife (Anna Hammond, not named), andseven children immigrated to America on board the Griffin, which landedat Boston September 18, 1634. His is listed simply "from London", andbound for Scituate.

    John was educated at Queen's College, Cambridge where he matriculated in1601, graduated B.A. in 1605 and M.A. in 1609. In 1611 he became a curateof the parish Church in Egerton, County Kent, where he remained until1623. That year he resigned his office in the Church of England, andbecame Pastor of the First Independent Church of London, which had noregular place of worship, but met from house to house. With the greaterpart of his congregation he was arrested April 22, 1632, by the spies ofArchbishop Land, and confined to Mygates prison, from which he wasreleased in 1634 & sailed for New England, arriving in September of thatyear. That same year Lothrop went to Scituate, where he formed the FirstChurch there. In 1639 the church divided and Lothrop went to Barnstable,becoming minister there. He died at Barnstable in 1653.

    Rev. Lothrop's arrival in New England was of importance. Gov. Winthropmade public mention of it, noting and commending the "modesty and reserveof one who had so prominently, so ably, so fearlessly upheld the Puritanfaith." Governor Winthrop's journal for September 18, 1634 notes that"The Grifin and another ship now arriving with about 200 passengers. Mr.Lathrop and Mr. Sims, two godly ministers coming in the same ship."
