    According to Sheila Richards Kirkpatrick Flamand, on 14 Feb 2010, in a conversation with her daughter Dawn, "Grandma Sarah" was her favourite. Sheila would be "sick" when she could get away with it so that she could stay with her grandmother, buried under a thick feather tick.

    Her sister Fern once said, "Two cookies wouldn't hurt me, Grandma!"

    According to Fern Richards, Sarah knew Father Lacombe, famous priest of central Alberta. She would run and play with the neighboring Blackfoot children and loved the Native drums and music. When she heard it she couldn't help nodding her head and tapping her foot along with it.

    Notes:

    The first Calgary phone book from 1903 gives Irish Mellon's phone number as 53. He lived at the Blue Rock Hotel, which he managed. The address given is simply Stephen Avenue (now 8 Street SW).

    An unidentified newspaper clipping (probably the Calgary Herald) says this:
    "In the early 1900's the Blue Rock became the Albion... This was the era of proprietor Edward 'Irish' Mellon, a robust, jovial Irishman, as his nick-name implies, who operated the hotel from 1900 to 1915 when he and his sons enlisted in the First World War. Mrs. Mellon ran the hotel until his return in 1919 when they took a service-man's homestead near Youngtown."

    Died:
    While on duty at a fire at Drummonds lumberyard on the east side of Yonge Street, on July 4, 1866, Mr. William Charlton, Assistant Engineer of the fire department, received injuries [broken spine] which proved fatal 6 days later. The council granted his widow the sum of $750 as a gratuity for the loss of her husband. William was 34 years old at his death.
    From 1856 to 1860 William worked as a Wagon maker at Victoria St. WS and
    from 1861 to 1865 - he was a Tavernkeeper at 56 Queen St. W NS.
