    Jane married Benjamin HUTCHINSON on 14 Nov 1689 in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts. Benjamin (son of Joseph HUTCHINSON and Bethiah PRINCE) was born before 26 Sep 1666 in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts; was christened on 26 Sep 1666 in First Church, Salem, Essex, Massachusetts; died in 1733 in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts.   1. 2.  Walter PHILLIPS was born on 9 Apr 1614 in Barnstable, Devon, England (son of John PHILLIPS and Joan Mary DYER); died after 21 Oct 1704 in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts.

    Notes:

    Walter, born in England 1619, was at Wicasset, Maine sometime before1655. He lived first at the Winneganee end of his land, later up theriver at Damariscotta, on the east side. John Pearce deposed that thePhillipses lived near the Salt Water Falls and that John Taylor's fencewas about 1/4 mile below the Falls. He received Indian deeds in 1661,1662, 1668 and 1671.

    Walter succeeded his son-in-law, James Smith, as the second Recorder ofthe Court for York County, Maine, and he served in that post from 1665until 1676. Walter was probably driven away by Indian raids in "the firstwar". Christopher Toppan bought the Damariscotta land in 1702.

    He doposed in June 1678 and claimed residence in Marlborough,Massachusetts, and was in Lynn, Essex, Massachusetts by November of thatyear. He later built at Salem Village, where he ramained until his deathin 1704.

    He is called senior when made Freeman in Salem Village on April 18, 1690,at which time he was residing at the village now called Danvers. On Dec.18, 1689, and again in 1691, Walter was "licensed to keep a house ofentertainment in Salem Village for strangers and other travelers".

    Being a Quaker, he refusing to perform military duty, had a fourth of anacre of his land seized and sold for the payment of his fine. (1703)

    His will is dated October 21, 1704. Then sick, he gives "all for life towife Margaret, exec(utrix)". The family of deceased son, John, of Lynn,is not mentioned in the will (John's will was administered July 22,1695, and mentions widow Hannah and 3 children). James, of Salem, isgiven all housing and land after his mother's death. Walter, of Lynn, isalso mentioned in the will, as are daughters Tabitha, Margaret, Sarah andJane.

    Walter signed the document disagreeing with the accusations made againstRebecca Nurse during the Salem Witch Trials

    Notes:

    John Phillips of Dorchester, a baker, came probably with the WinthropFleet in 1630. He applied 19 October of that year to be made freeman, butwas not sworn Freeman until 7 August 1632. By wife Joanna Dyer, he hadMary, b. Apr. 1633, died at 7 yrs.; John, 22 Apr. 1635; Martha, Apr.1636, died soon; Mary, again; Israel, 3 June 1642, died next year. By theGeneral Court he was appointed constable 1636; removed to Boston, becameone of the founder and a deacon of the second church on 5 June 1650. Hiswife died 22 October 1675, says the record and gr-st. (buried) 24 Oct.aged 80 years. but perhaps exaggerated or copied wrong. In Januaryfollowing he married widow Sarah Minor, and died 16 Dec. 1682, aged 77.His only child that reached maturity, Mary, married George Munjoy ofFalmouth, and after him Robert Lawrence of the same.

    John Mylom, cooper, house and garden; sold to John Phillips,biscuit-maker, in 1648, lots east of Hanover Street and north of the Coveand Mill Creek, Nos. 1 to 10 . It was upon this lot that one of theoldest buildings in Boston, half way up Cross street, existed to our day.Phillips, who had come from Dorchester, added to his estate adjacentlands, and built the stone house; which, when it was torn down in 1864,was considered the oldest building in Boston. It has been described byMr. Bynner, in Vol. I. of Memorial History of Boston. Shurtleff,Description of Boston, p. 667, has traced its history to our day.Phillips, before he died, sold the part of his lot next the water-side toCaptain Christopher Clarke.
